How Your Air Conditioner Works

An air conditioning system works by removing heat from indoor spaces and transferring it outside, thus cooling the indoor air. The process involves several key components and the principles of thermodynamics. Here’s an explanation of how it works!

The Refrigeration Cycle

1. Evaporation of Refrigerant: The process begins with a fluid called refrigerant, which circulates through the air conditioning system. This refrigerant is typically a chemical compound that has a low boiling point, allowing it to evaporate quickly.

2. Compression: The refrigerant starts its journey in the evaporator coil, located inside the indoor unit of the air conditioner. Here, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the indoor air, causing it to evaporate into a gas. The evaporator coil contains cold liquid refrigerant, and as warm air from the indoor space passes over the coil, the heat is absorbed by the refrigerant, cooling the air.

The compressor, located in the outdoor unit of the air conditioner, then compresses the low-pressure, low-temperature refrigerant gas, raising its temperature and pressure. This compressed gas is now in a high-pressure state.

3. Condensation: The high-pressure, high-temperature refrigerant gas flows through the condenser coil, located in the outdoor unit. As outdoor air passes over the condenser coil, the heat from the refrigerant is released into the outdoor air, causing the refrigerant to condense back into a liquid state.

4. Expansion: The now-cooled and liquid refrigerant passes through an expansion valve or metering device, which reduces its pressure and temperature. This process prepares the refrigerant to repeat the cycle by entering the evaporator coil again to absorb more heat from the indoor air.

5. Air Circulation: Throughout this process, a blower fan inside the indoor unit circulates indoor air over the evaporator coil, where it is cooled and then distributed back into the indoor space through ducts or vents.

Modern air conditioning systems are equipped with additional features such as filters to remove airborne particles, thermostats for temperature control, and programmable settings for energy efficiency.

How Your Ductless Cooling System Works

A home furnace is a crucial component of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. It works by generating heat and distributing it throughout the home to maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Here’s a basic overview of how a typical home furnace operates:

Outdoor Unit

Like traditional systems, a ductless mini-split has an outdoor unit containing a compressor, condenser coil, and fan. The compressor circulates refrigerant between the outdoor and indoor units.

Indoor Unit(s)

Instead of a single indoor unit connected to ductwork, ductless mini-split systems have one or more indoor units mounted directly in the rooms they serve. These units contain an evaporator coil, a fan, and a small air filter. The evaporator coil absorbs heat from the indoor air.

Refrigerant Circulation

Refrigerant is pumped from the outdoor unit to the indoor unit through insulated refrigerant lines. The refrigerant absorbs heat from the indoor air as it flows through the indoor unit’s evaporator coil, turning into a gas.

Heat Exchange

The indoor unit’s fan blows air over the cold evaporator coil, cooling the air. The cooled air is then distributed into the room, providing comfort.

Return Flow

The refrigerant, now in a gaseous state, returns to the outdoor unit through the refrigerant lines. There, the compressor compresses the refrigerant, raising its temperature and pressure.

Heat Release

As the refrigerant passes through the outdoor unit’s condenser coil, it releases heat to the outdoor air. The fan in the outdoor unit helps dissipate this heat.

Repeat Cycle

The refrigerant returns to the indoor unit, and the cycle continues, continuously cooling the indoor space.

Ductless mini-split systems offer several advantages over traditional central air conditioning systems, including:

  • 1

    Zoned Cooling

Each indoor unit can be controlled independently, allowing for personalized comfort in different areas of the home.

  • 2

    No Ductwork Required

Installation is simpler and less invasive compared to traditional systems because there’s no need for ductwork, making ductless mini-splits ideal for older homes or buildings without existing ductwork.

  • 3

    Energy Efficiency

By eliminating duct losses, ductless mini-splits can be more energy-efficient than central air conditioning systems.

  • 4

    Flexibility

Ductless systems can be installed in a variety of configurations, including wall-mounted, ceiling-mounted, or floor-mounted units, providing flexibility in design and placement.
